You deserve a break after a year as long and eventful as 2024! However, before you pack your bags and jet off to distant lands, make sure you’re prepared to travel with your jewellery!
Jewellery care while you’re on vacation is simple, however, it requires a little extra care and attention. We’ll walk you through our premier tips and tricks for keeping your jewellery safe, secure and sparkling while you’re on the move.
Tip #1: Remove Jewellery Before Applying Sunscreen
We all know how important it is to slather on sunscreen before heading out into the sun. But did you know that some chemicals found in sunscreen can damage certain types of jewellery?
The oils and lotions in sunscreen can leave a residue on your jewellery that can dull its sparkle. For jewelry with stones like diamonds or rubies, lotion can gather under the stones and between the prongs, which creates a grimy, lackluster appearance. Additionally, some sunscreens contain chemicals that can make diamonds appear hazy or cloudy.
To avoid any potential damage, make sure to remove your jewellery before applying sunscreen. And don’t forget to reapply sunscreen regularly throughout the day!
Tip #2: Store Jewellery in Separate Compartments
Tangled necklaces and scratched earrings are just a couple of the hazards that can come with travelling with jewellery. To avoid these mishaps, try storing each piece in its own separate compartment or ziplock bag.
Not only will this prevent tangling and scratching, but it will also make it easier to find what you’re looking for when you need it.
Tip #3: Take Jewellery Off Before Swimming
Whether you’re swimming in the ocean, a pool, or a lake, it’s always a good idea to remove your jewellery before taking the plunge.
Jewelry and water often don’t mix well, especially when it comes to saltwater and chemically treated pool water. Saltwater can corrode gold gradually, weakening its structure and potentially leading to breakage and even though sterling silver is generally more durable, it’s not immune to the corrosive effects of saltwater. Additionally, the high salt content in seawater can even affect diamonds, causing them to lose their shine over time. Beyond these physical effects, there’s always the risk of losing your precious jewellery while swimming. To avoid these risks, it’s best to err on the side of caution and remove your jewellery before swimming.
Tip #4: Rinse Jewellery with Water After Exposure to Sand or Saltwater
Even if you do take your jewellery off before swimming, it’s still possible for it to come into contact with sand or saltwater.
If this happens, be sure to rinse your jewellery with fresh water as soon as possible. This will help prevent any damage or corrosion. Then, dry with a towel – the softer the better to avoid any scratches.
Tip #5: Take Photos of Your Jewellery Before Travelling
In the (hopefully) unlikely event that your jewellery does get lost or stolen while you’re travelling, having photos of each piece can be a huge help.
Take clear, well-lit photos of each piece from multiple angles, and make sure to store them safely on your phone or computer. Jewellers and insurance companies will often require clear photographs and valuations of your jewellery in the event that they need to be replaced.
