All That Glitters: A Modern Guide to Diamonds

One thing is for sure, diamonds have a unique history and have dazzled the masses with their beauty and popularity. The notion of diamonds being a girl’s best friend and the symbol of the ultimate commitment is a testament to their timeless lure.

It’s this timelessness that puts diamonds on top of the hierarchy of luxury commodities. The fascination with diamonds is no surprise—formed deep within the Earth, they symbolize wealth, carry ancient history and incredible variety white shining with sheer elegance through their cut, color, carat, and clarity. All of which we will explore in our blog today.

A Brief History of Diamonds

They were first discovered in India as early as the 4th century. Word has it that diamonds were, in fact, underwhelming in sparkle but revered for their strength and rarity. They quickly became a symbol of power and eternity as they were believed to ward off evil and offer protection in battle.

During the Middle Ages, popularity soared with the discovery of new diamond sources in Brazil, and later, South Africa. In 1866, a significant discovery in Kimberley, South Africa, marked the beginning of the world’s largest diamond rush, changing the course of diamond history and positioning South Africa as a global diamond hub.

Diamonds adorned royalty and the nobility. It was in 1947 when De Beers launched the now-iconic campaign “A Diamond is Forever”, entwining the story of everlasting commitment.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and diamonds are more accessible than ever, thanks to advances in mining, cutting, and the rise of lab-grown alternatives. Yet, the fascination remains unchanged in essence, but evolving in expression.

Mined vs Lab-Grown Diamonds

The innovation of mined and lab-grown diamonds has provided us with choice. Both options are certified and graded to international standards and both options are real diamonds. They are identical in chemical composition and sparkle, but they differ in origin and environmental impact.

Mined diamonds are formed over billions of years deep in the earth. They are admired for their connection to nature, heritage, and tradition, but come with a high environmental impact due to the mining footprint and energy use. They are also typically more expensive due to their rarity and traditional supply chain.

Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created in laboratories using HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) or CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) technology. They are more affordable, making larger stones more accessible, and they often appeal to those seeking a modern, conscious choice with a sustainable story. These diamonds have a lower environmental impact and are gaining popularity as sustainable practices continue to emerge.

The Four C’s

There is a story behind our choices and decisions, guided by the value we place on them. When choosing diamonds, you have what we call the Four C’s: cut, colour, carat, and clarity. All of which will make your diamond design a truly bespoke dream. Let’s look at these Four Cs more closely.

Cuts of Diamonds: The Art of Shape

A diamond’s cut is more than its shape. It determines how the stone interacts with light. A well-cut diamond sparkles with fire, brilliance, and elegance. Cut qualities are graded as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor. At Uwe Koetter, we prioritise cuts that are Excellent and Very Good.

Here are some of the most beloved shapes:

  • Round Brilliant – The classic choice, engineered for maximum sparkle.
  • Princess – A square cut with modern flair and clean symmetry.
  • Emerald – Rectangular with step-cut facets that create a hall-of-mirrors effect.
  • Oval – Elongated brilliance that flatters the finger.
  • Cushion – Soft, pillow-like edges with a romantic, vintage charm.
  • Marquise – Boat-shaped drama that elongates the hand.
  • Pear – A unique teardrop shape, combining round and marquise features.
  • Asscher – Art Deco geometry and timeless sophistication.

Each shape reveals a different personality. Consider what speaks to you most when creating or selecting your dream piece.

Colour: More Than Meets the Eye

Diamonds aren’t always colourless, and that’s part of their charm. White diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The less colour, the more rare and valuable the stone. However, G–H coloured diamonds are often the sweet spot. They appear near-colourless to the naked eye and offer greater value without sacrificing beauty.

Then there are fancy coloured diamonds, which form naturally in hues of yellow, pink, blue, and even green. These rare gems are bold, expressive, and often sought after for their individuality. And if you love something a little more raw and unconventional, salt and pepper diamonds, with their natural inclusions and galaxy-like appearance, are fast becoming the choice for modern romantics.

A Curious Thing About Carats: Weight and Wonder

Did you know the term carat comes from the humble carob seed? Ancient traders used these tiny seeds as a standard of weight due to their uniformity. Today, one carat equals exactly 0.2 grams, but that nature-rooted legacy remains.

While carat weight often gets the most attention, it’s not the only measure of beauty. A well-cut smaller diamond can outshine a poorly cut larger one. Carat speaks to presence, yes, but it’s the balance with cut, colour, and clarity that creates brilliance.

Clarity: Beauty in the Details

Clarity refers to the presence, or absence, of internal features called inclusions and surface characteristics known as blemishes. These occur naturally during a diamond’s formation and are graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1–I3). Up to around SI2, most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye—you would need a 10x magnifying loupe to see them.

Most diamonds aren’t perfectly flawless, but that’s part of their story. Many inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and don’t affect the diamond’s sparkle or beauty. In fact, they can make your stone truly one of a kind.

Choosing the right clarity is about finding the right balance between visibility, value, and personal preference.
