A Tour of the Tourmaline Stone

Even though tourmaline is a relatively new gem in the jewellery scene, this eye-catching gemstone has firmly stamped its foot in the door of high-class bijouterie. Our latest range, Spots of Colour, largely consists of tourmaline gems due to their unique and vibrant colour.

In this month’s blog, we’ll take you on a tour of tourmaline – history, lore, variants and meanings. Let’s get right to it!

Ancient Egyptian Mythology

According to ancient Egyptian legend, a tourmaline passed over a rainbow on its arduous journey up from the centre of the earth. On its journey, it absorbed all the colours of the rainbow, earning it the nickname, “gemstone of the rainbow”. Its kaleidoscopic colours seem to shift and dance about with every movement, charming the beholder. Similarly, some tourmaline gemstones display a striking phenomenon called chatoyancy, also known as the cat’s eye effect. This occurs when the stone is cut into a cabochon, revealing a narrow band of light that appears to move across the surface of the stone.

A Rainbow of Colours

Tourmaline is the newer, secondary birthstone of October – sharing the spot with the traditional birthstone, opal. Its name originates from the Sinhalese word “toramall”, meaning ‘stone with mixed colours’. Fitting then, since not many gemstones match tourmalines array of colour varieties. There are even variants of tourmalines, such as watermelon tourmaline and bi-colour tourmalines, that consist of more than one colour. It is easy to see why people sometimes confuse a tourmaline stone with other colour gemstones, like sapphire, emeralds or rubies. They truly are gemstones of the rainbow.

Healing Properties and Symbolism

Beyond its stunning appearance, tourmaline is revered for its profound healing properties and symbolic significance, making it a treasured gemstone for body, mind, and spirit. Tourmaline is believed to possess a calming influence, promoting emotional balance and stability. By balancing the emotions, tourmaline could help alleviate stress, anxiety and overwhelming feelings. This powerful gemstone is also thought to offer protection from negative energy, creating a shield of positivity around the wearer. It is believed to repel harmful vibrations, as well as safeguard emotional and spiritual well-being. Thirdly, steeped in romantic tradition, tourmaline can symbolise enduring love, loyalty and friendship. Its vibrant energies nurture deep connections and encourage open communication, making it an ideal token of devotion for loved ones.
