The Padparadscha Sapphire  – How a story gets cast in gold

At Uwe Koetter, we don’t just design jewellery – we bring stories to life. This process is at the heart of what we do, and it’s where we draw both inspiration and deep-rooted passion. Every step is approached with care and attention to detail. When a customer reaches out to us, it often begins with their story – a desire to honour their heritage, a deepening commitment to another, or even a tribute to self. One such jewellery piece is the adored Lotus ring that we will explore in this blog.
pieces. But at Uwe Koetter, we believe chains deserve their own spotlight.

The Stone: Padparadscha Sapphire

One such story begins with a rare gemstone, the Padparadscha sapphire and a client who wanted more than just a ring. She wanted something that reflected her roots, her resilience, and the symbolism that mattered to her. Let’s explore what makes this gem so special.

The name “Padparadscha” can be pronounced in a few ways, but two common pronunciations are “pad-per-add-sha” and “pad-pah-raj-ah”. The name is derived from the Sinhalese word “padma raga,” meaning “lotus flower,” which is also the national flower of Sri Lanka.

Padparadscha sapphires are prized for their distinctive blend of pink and orange, a shade that echoes the soft glow of a lotus flower at dusk.

Padparadscha Sapphires Origin

Mostly found in Sri Lanka (with rare finds in Madagascar and Tanzania), this stone isn’t just beautiful but also resilient. Rated 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, it’s second only to a diamond. It is a perfect stone for a piece that’s meant to be worn, lived in, and passed down.

For our client, the choice was deeply personal. We designed something symbolic, while also being beautifully elegant in its allure. It’s the kind of ring that you see and can’t help but ask the wearer to take a closer look at the detail.

The Making: Behind the Scenes of a Lotus Ring

There are many processes that have to occur before a client receives their Jewellery in a velvet box. At Uwe Koetter, every design begins with a thoughtful process and while the steps may be similar, each piece is uniquely tailored to the preferences of the client. Every bespoke creation starts with a story – guiding the choice of metal, the carefully selected gemstones and diamonds, and how the piece will come to life.

Let’s take a closer look at the step-by-step process of the lotus ring:

The Making: Behind the Scenes of a Lotus Ring

After an in-depth consultation with the client, we sketched and digitally created the design using CAD software. Every claw and curve had to honour the symmetry of a lotus and house the rare gem at its centre. We are able to present our clients with a rendered 3D model that showcases how the ring will look in real life. This is that first ‘wow’ moment and where any final decisions or amendments are made to the design. Once we receive a final approval from the client, we move on to the manufacturing process.

Refinement

Once the design is finalised, then our goldsmiths step in. Whether the jewellery piece is hand-made or a cast, the goldsmiths are crucial to the manufacturing process –  this is where form becomes art. They clean, refine, and coax out the details. This step takes a focused eye, a steady hand, and years of experience to master. Our goldsmiths are well-trained and experts at what they do.

Polish & Final Checks

A final polish brings the metal to life, revealing the full brilliance of the piece. Then comes a meticulous inspection. Every angle is examined, every joint tested, every sparkle considered. Only once it meets our highest standards is it ready to be called complete.

We document the piece before it’s delivered to commemorate each piece as a moment in time, capturing the creation that we are always undoubtedly proud of. Each piece we design fuels the passion and inspiration behind what we do. Our team is so invested in their individual part in the process and love to dive deep into their expertise.

More Than Jewellery

This wasn’t just a ring. It was a reflection of a client’s story. Her decision to celebrate herself. That’s what we’re here for.  Not mass production. We specialise in creating one-of-a-kind pieces that honour life’s most meaningful moments. Whether you’re marking a milestone or expressing your story through design, we’re here to bring your vision to life.
