There are some moments in life that quietly change everything. The first time you hear a heartbeat. The tiny kicks that become part of your daily rhythm. The day you finally hold a new life in your arms and feel your world rearrange itself around them.
More and more, families are choosing to honour this chapter with a deeply personal gift for the mother. Often called a push gift or baby bauble, this gesture is about more than celebration. It is about recognising the journey her body and heart have undertaken, and marking the beginning of a new family story that will be told for generations.
At Uwe Koetter, we love being a part of this beautiful journey by creating pieces that will cherish this extraordinary milestone for many years to come. These pieces are not simply beautiful; they are designed to hold names, dates, birthstones and tiny symbols that will forever belong to one family alone.

What is a Push Gift?
A push gift is a present given to a mother to celebrate the birth of her child, often from a partner or close family. While the name feels modern, the idea of honouring a mother’s role in bringing new life into the world is believed to go back several hundred years. In South Africa, the tradition is still gaining momentum, yet we are seeing more parents choosing to mark this milestone with something lasting and symbolic – an heirloom that treasured part of the family’s story.
Preserving legacies and family stories always remain at the heart of Uwe Koetter Jewellers’ work and passion. When we design and manufacture a push present, we understand the importance of such a piece – it is not simply a pretty piece of jewellery but a symbol for family, closeness and love.
A Thoughtful Push Gift Can:
- Celebrate the mother’s courage, resilience and love.
- Honour the exact moment a new life arrived.
- Become a future heirloom, handed from one generation to the next.
- Carry symbols, initials and gemstones that are uniquely theirs.
Every detail is an opportunity to weave in meaning, whether it is the mother’s favourite gemstone, the child’s birthstone, the nursery colour or a simple engraving of the newborn’s birthdate.
Push Gift Ideas
Below are some ways in which our clients have decided to honour this wonderful milestone as part of their family’s story:
Birthstone rings

Birthstone jewellery is a timeless way to anchor a piece to a specific moment in time. For a baby born in January, for example, we recently created a half eternity ring set with garnets, the birthstone for that month.
The ring can be worn on its own or stacked with the mother’s existing bands. Over the years, additional birthstones can even be added to represent siblings, creating a living record of the family on her hand.
Name bracelets with gemstone charms

Name bracelets are a tender way to keep a child close. These pieces can be designed either for the mother or, in time, for the child to wear themselves. We often incorporate a birthstone or favourite gemstone charm alongside the name, adding a soft glint of colour and meaning to the bracelet.
Delicate and comfortable enough for everyday wear, they become part of her daily ritual – a small reminder whenever her wrist catches the light.
Engraved name pendants

For those who prefer a minimal aesthetic, an engraved disk or pendant is an elegant option. A child’s name and birth date can be engraved on a simple gold disk that rests close to the heart.
Over time, additional disks can be added for siblings, creating a cluster of names and dates that jingle softly against one another. Each disk holds a moment, yet together they tell the story of an entire family.
Ceramic initial pendants
One of our most recent commissions was a pendant featuring the baby’s initial cast against a pearly ceramic background. It was created as a gift for the mother and felt both modern and sentimental.
This piece inspired us to design a small collection of ceramic pendants that can be customised depending on what feels unique and personal to the mother. They can select from a variety of ceramic backgrounds, from matte to glittery or pearly finishes, in soft and vibrant colours. The result is a pendant that feels as unique as the child it represents.
Tiny baby feet and symbolic imagery

As part of this series, we have been working on our own designs for push gifts. Two of the first designs feature tiny baby feet cast against soft blue or soft pink matte ceramic backgrounds. However, we have a wide variety of colours to work with for the parents who want to move away from the traditional colour palette.

We’ve created these pendants to showcase the endless possibilities behind a simple and elegant pendant. Parents can customise pendants with imagery that resonates with their story, whether that is baby feet, stars, initials, a subtle heart shape or something entirely personal.
Designing a Push Gift That Feels Like Yours
There is no single way to design a push gift. Instead, we invite our clients to think about the emotions and memories they want the piece to hold.
Some beautiful starting points include:
Birthstone
Including a birthstone in the design of a push present is a beautiful and more symbolic way to cherish the birth of a child.
If you are considering a birthstone piece, this guide is a helpful place to begin:
- January: Garnet
- February: Amethyst
- March: Aquamarine
- April: Diamond
- May: Emerald
- June: Pearl, Alexandrite or Moonstone
- July: Ruby
- August: Peridot or Spinel
- September: Sapphire
- October: Opal or Tourmaline
- November: Topaz or Citrine
- December: Turquoise, Tanzanite or Zircon
Initials and Names
Initials or a full name engraved on a jewellery piece creates a deeply personal gift that can eventually be passed down to the child.
Inside Jokes
For one’s partner and the mother of your child, creating a jewellery piece that refers back to a special moment between the two of you can be a wonderful way to honour her and show appreciation for the journey she undertakes for your family.
Future Heirloom Potential
Consider how the piece might be worn and cherished in years to come. Many parents enjoy the idea that their child will one day inherit the jewellery created in their honour.
During a design consultation, our team will guide you through metals, stones and settings, sketching ideas and refining details until the piece feels just right. It is a collaborative process that respects both the aesthetic and the emotional significance of the gift.
Begin your own push gift story
Whether you are preparing to welcome a little one, surprising your partner, or looking to honour a birth that has already taken place, a thoughtfully designed piece of jewellery can become a powerful marker of this chapter in your family’s history.
If you would like to explore a bespoke push gift, we invite you to visit our showroom or contact us to book a personal consultation. Together, we can shape a piece that tells the story of the day a new life arrived and a new version of you was born, too.
